They Mattered

They mattered.

This wasn't a technically perfect shot. I was riding in a van, catching glimpses of Mayan towns through the smears of windshield wipers as we headed toward the coffee fields. It was a rainy day, and local churches were just starting to let out, filling the streets with people heading home.

I only had a split second to capture this couple. I don’t know exactly what they were waiting for—a ride, a friend, or just a break in the weather—but I was drawn to the way they stood out against the dust and the concrete.

In that moment, I felt like the outsider invading their world. Normal life was happening all around them—laundry drying on the lines, construction sand piled on the curb, dogs wandering the road—but for a heartbeat, the frame focused on them.

They are people just like me, finding their way through life and providing for their families. More than just a "subject" in a photo, they are a reminder that we are all looking for the same things: purpose and a place to belong. The focus might be slightly off, but that didn't matter. They mattered.

Have you ever had a split-second encounter with a stranger that stayed with you long after you passed by? Sometimes the "blurry" moments are the ones that tell the clearest stories.
