Camping in Silverton: A Weekend to Slow Down and Take It In

Morning light in the San Juans

We spent a few days camping near Silverton, Colorado, and it was exactly what I needed. No schedule. No distractions. Just time with my wife, in the mountains, good coffee, and a chance to reset.

There’s something special about the San Juan Mountains. The mornings hit different—cold air, quiet skies, and light spilling across the ridges. I brought my camera to capture the views, but really, I just wanted to document the feeling of being out there.

What stood out most on this trip wasn’t the big landscapes (though they were incredible)—it was the in-between moments. A shadow on the tent. The sound of boots on gravel. That’s the kind of stuff I want to hold onto, and it’s what I try to capture in my outdoor photography.

If you're looking for a place to slow down, breathe, and take in some of the best views in Colorado’s backcountry, I can’t recommend Silverton camping enough.
