Why Iceland Is More Than Just a Vacation Destination

Bruerfoss

There are places you simply visit on vacation, and then there are places that change you. For me, that place is Iceland. I’ve only been twice, but it’s moved me in ways that are hard to explain—something about it just sticks with you long after you’ve left.

South Coast Iceland: Landscapes That Feel Out of This World

On the surface, you might not expect Iceland to be your top vacation choice. After all, it literally has “ice” in its name. Much of the country is open farmland and remote wilderness. In summer, the high temperatures hover around 60 degrees at best. But don’t let that fool you—South Coast Iceland has some of the most breathtaking and otherworldly landscapes you’ll ever see. From massive waterfalls to black sand beaches, this is a place where raw beauty meets untamed nature, and every turn feels like stepping into another world.

I’ve walked a lot in the mountains in Iceland. And as you come to a new valley, as you come to a new landscape, you have a certain view. If you stand still, the landscape doesn’t necessarily tell you how big it is. It doesn’t really tell you what you’re looking at. The moment you start to move the mountain starts to move.

The Colors and Textures That Make Iceland Photography Unforgettable

The colors of Iceland are unforgettable—deep greens, fiery reds, earthy browns, golden yellows, and crisp blues—all standing out against the black lava that blankets much of the island. The textures are just as striking: rugged basalt cliffs, soft moss, roaring waterfalls like Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, and volcanic lava fields give the land a richness and depth you won’t find anywhere else. If you’re into Iceland photography, every stop feels like it belongs on the cover of a magazine.

Connecting with the People of Iceland

And it’s not just the scenery. The people of Iceland are warm, welcoming, and genuine. Whether you’re walking along the black sand beaches of Vík, standing in the spray at Skógafoss, or chasing the midnight sun along the South Coast, there’s a quiet pull that makes you want to stay longer.

Why Iceland Keeps Calling Me Back

I can’t fully explain it, but Iceland has a way of making you slow down, breathe a little deeper, and see the world differently—and that’s why I’m already figuring out how to get back.
