Soul And Structure
I spent some time today just observing what was presented to me.
There’s a specific kind of beauty in the geometry of the city, like the way a circular cutout can isolate a building and let you peek at the design of a clock tower. But a building doesn’t have a soul. It looks great, but it doesn't have a story.
Then there are the people.
I met a man today with a sign that read, "Anything is Everything." He was soft-spoken, humble, and clearly grateful. When I’m out with my camera, I’m always thinking about the line between capturing a moment and exploitation. I don’t ever want to just "get in someone’s face."
I want people to be seen.
I approached him, we talked, and I asked for his picture. For me, the black and white felt appropriate for where he is in life. It has a rawness that color doesn't always provide. It strips away the noise and lets you look at the person.
I also ran into a young photographer out on his day off, camera in hand. It’s a reminder that we’re all out here trying to capture a piece of the story. Whether it’s the struggle or the simple joy of a hobby, it all belongs to the same design.
The world is full of variety that we usually miss: the struggle, the good, the color, and the weight. My goal is just to be respectful of the space and witness the divine design in all of it.
