The Eastern Plains
A morning oasis. There is a perfect, natural order in the way the light first breaks across the plains.
The Day’s Journey
I spent the morning chasing the balance between order and peace on the plains. It started with a sunrise that felt like a perfect, natural oasis, but the real story was in the structures that have survived the wind for decades.
From the 'bones' of the Aroya schoolhouse to the massive iron curves of the Hugo Roundhouse, I found myself looking past the light and into the history of the structures. The peeling paint and the dust aren't things that need to be fixed; they are the texture of a story that is still being told.
There is an incredible value in things that have been weathered but remain standing.
A retired relic of the rails. It’s easy to see the rust, but I’m more interested in the miles it’s traveled and the history it carries in its frame. - Hugo, Colorado
