Not The Only One Watching
I wasn't the only one watching.
This is the Children’s Pool at La Jolla, where the seawall stands as a buffer between the beach and the constant onslaught of the Pacific. While the sun is technically the "subject" of the shot, I found myself just as interested in the people standing on that wall.
They were there to be witnesses, just like me.
Even with the "keow" of the gulls and the rhythmic crash of the surf against the rocks, there’s a specific kind of stillness that happens when the sun hits the horizon. You can still hear people talking, but the sounds of nature are really what fill the space.
I didn’t have to wait long for a bird to cross the light; seagulls, pelicans, and various other birds were everywhere. It would have been difficult to get a picture without one. It was a gift of a moment—a reminder of what it feels like to be just one small part of everything happening around me.

Do you ever find yourself stopping just because everyone else is looking at something beautiful? There’s something special about being a witness in a crowd.
